Who We Are

Pictograph Cave State Park is a natural, cultural-historic attraction just 6 miles southeast of Billings, Montana.  Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964, the site is known for the archaeological excavation carried out there in the late 1930s.  With over 30,000 artifacts found, much was learned about the Native First Peoples that lived off the land at this site for thousands of years.  Today, visitors can still see painted rock art within the sandstone alcove of Pictograph Cave and wonder about the early clans and tribes that passed through this area.  The park is just one of 55 Montana State Parks responsible for resource stewardship, conservation and providing public recreation.

What We Do

We preserve and protect a unique heritage site and the natural environment found here. We provide educational tours and activities to hundreds of school children every year. The park gets over 50,000 visitors a year, people from all over the world interested in learning about Montana's history and its' earliest inhabitants.  Our friendly staff greets visitors and maintain the park grounds for a safe and pleasant outdoor experience.  Educational displays in our visitor center talk about archaeology and rock art.  We have a small gift shop and classroom for meetings as well.
