Volunteer: Child Advocate (CASA)

About

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) are community volunteers who work with abused and neglected children in foster care and serve as the children’s advocate and voice to the court as their case moves through the courts and the child welfare system.

Our CASA Advocates serve as the "eyes and ears" of the court. They meet with the children every month and interview foster parents, family members, teachers, health care providers and anyone else involved in the children’s lives. The CASA then provides a monthly written report and recommendations directly to the judge presiding over the case. Our volunteer Advocates are appointed to a group of siblings, or sometimes one child, and dedicate 5-15 hours per month to their case. Often the CASA is the one constant in the children’s lives through their journey in the child welfare system, and as such we ask that the volunteer commit to a case through its entirety which can last up to 2 years.

When someone decides to become a CASA Advocate, our office begins the application process which includes an online application, interview, background checks, and an 8 week training course. Once a volunteer has completed these requirements they will be sworn in by a 13th Judicial District Judge at which time the CASA becomes eligible for appointment to a case.

To help you learn more about the role of a CASA Advocate, we hold Information Sessions twice per month. Click the Respond button to contact us and learn more!

Volunteer: Front Desk Volunteers

A vital link between the history of the Moss and its visitors are the Front Desk, or Visitor Services Volunteers. These volunteers greet visitors as they arrive, take admission fees, work in the gift shop, operate multiple digital devices, and share the history of the artifacts displayed around the entrance while visitors wait for their tour. Theirs is the first face a visitor will see when they arrive at the Moss Mansion!

Shift hours vary with seasonal tour operations and can be mornings in the summer or afternoons year-round with weekday and weekend shifts available.

The schedule is set a month in advance (following a training period). We typically ask tour volunteers to work one shift per week, but we can offer more or less depending on your availability. Shifts occur 11:30AM-4PM every day except Tuesdays (when we are closed) during our regular season. Summer shifts are 9:30AM-1PM and 12:30PM-4:00PM Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat, and 11:30-4PM Sundays.

Volunteer: Site Historians, Docents, Hosts

The Moss Mansion recruits volunteers to help share the history of the mansion and the Moss family to visitors of all ages and from around the world. Trained in the history of the family and the home, site historians and hosts are a vital link between the history of the Moss Mansion and its visitors. Shifts vary seasonally and can include morning and afternoon shifts on weekdays and weekends.

Docents lead self-paced or guided tours through each room on three floors. They should be able to easily manage three flights of stairs and should be very comfortable welcoming guests, giving presentations and answering questions. Docents are needed for scheduled daily tours and special group tours.

Hosts welcome guests to the first or second floors for self-paced tours of the museum and are required to use several flights of stairs. Hosts are expected to greet guests, direct them on an appropriate path through the rooms, and provide descriptions of the rooms and background of the family in a less structured environment than Docents/Tour Guides. They will be expected to monitor all guests on a particular floor during their four-hour shift.

Many volunteers take on both Host and Docent duties butut can focus on Hosting if more comfortable in that position.   The schedule is set a month in advance (following a training period). Volunteer: Photographer

The Photographer takes pictures of children, class events and community scenes for the children to use as a basis for creating literature and for posting in the classroom setting (i.e. on bulletin boards). As children begin to make meaningful connections between pictures and words, pictures can be used to reinforce the relationship. Children can dictate stories and make books using cut-out pictures for illustrations.

All regular volunteers will need to complete a background check, Health Statement, and have proof of MMR and tDap Immunizations that are required by Child Care Licensing and the Head Start Performance Standards!

Volunteers are critical to the success of Early Head Start. The participation of volunteers has been an effective way of mobilizing community resources to strengthen services. Volunteers can be professionals and non-professionals. Parents can become volunteers and learn more about child development training and potential employment opportunities. Volunteers can assist with classroom activities, the upkeep and renovation of the centers and the playground, and other similar tasks. Volunteers may choose to give a few hours of their time and may volunteer every week.

Volunteer: Saturday Store Associate

The revenue from the Bargain Center goes directly to Montana Rescue Mission to help support the programs we offer our shelter guests. We provide the guest with food, shelter, clothing and offer counseling for individuals to address mental, physical, and spiritual needs. We offer instructions for life skills, addiction recovery, parenting, and much more.  We are striving to bring healing to our guests.

Through our services, we meet every individual with programs and relationships that demonstrate love and compassion and help them receive healing. But, we need your help to do our work! This is not something that we can do on our own, but takes the entire community, working together, to make a difference.

Volunteers are needed on Saturdays to help with organizing different sections of the store, tagging clothing, and getting the store ready for the holiday season too!

Volunteer: Cook / Provide Drop-in Center Meals

Every weekday, Tumbleweed provides a hot meal for youth who stop into our Drop-In Center. We serve lunch from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM every day. The Drop-In Center is not a shelter, but it provides an important space for youth to escape the elements and, for a short time, a chance to rest and refocus. We depend on our volunteers to provide a hot and yummy meal for our youth to enjoy during this time. We especially appreciate it when volunteers sign up for a monthly commitment! This helps us set a schedule for our youth!

We ask that meals be enough for 25-30 youth and that you drop it off at the Tumbleweed office before 10:00 AM on the day you are scheduled.

Please fill out the form above or contact Sophia Rataj to schedule a date that works best for you!

Volunteer: Habitat ReStore

When you give your time to ReStore, more and more resources are available to put toward preparing the homes of our partner families. That’s a big reason we rely on volunteers to power our ReStore.

At the ReStore there are many different tasks to do and because we are open six days a week we can be extremely flexible to accommodate what time works best for you!

Volunteers are needed as sorters/cleaners/pricers, donation pick-up drivers and unloaders, cashiers (age 18 and up), and sales assistants. We also recruit volunteer groups to help with store projects-this could be a great volunteering opportunity for a club, youth group, college class or more! We would like volunteers who are interested in and capable of working with the public and with a heart for the Habitat mission, “Seeking to put God’s love into action, bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope.” Retail experience is not necessary.

No amount of support is too small! Volunteer for an hour or volunteer every week, come on your own or bring all your friends, and remember you don’t need any special skills to be an exceptional volunteer, just enthusiasm and the desire to help.

Volunteer: YWCA Billings & COVID-19

YWCA Billings’ Salute Celebration and Awards event is postponed to June 12, 2020.

While we regret the inconvenience to you and your guests, everyone’s safety and health is the top priority. Please share this information with the people you invited to join you. We encourage everyone to enter June 12 on your calendars. Reminders and tickets will be issued closer to the event. We look forward to celebrating our honorees and the friend-and fund-raising that goes along with the festive occasion! Please contact events@ywcabillings.org or call 406-252-6303 with any questions, or if you need a list of your guests.

Event cancellation does not cancel the need for services and programs.

As the COVID-19 coronavirus impacts our community, YWCA is doing everything we can to avoid closing down services. Beginning Monday, March 16 we moved to a remote working environment. Our physical locations are closed to the public and minimally staffed, and our professionals are collaborating with each other and people who need assistance through other means—by phone, video, email, and through our online portal. Services will continue in this mode unless we are otherwise instructed by local public officials.

YWCA needs and appreciates your support more than ever!

We rely heavily on the funds raised at our events and through community donations to provide shelter, safety, housing and other services to women and children who are victims of violence and poverty. Thank you for standing with us and the people we serve in this trying time. We are here for them, and our community.

Stay strong and be well!

We ask for each volunteer to work a minimum of two shifts per month. This helps the volunteer keep up on the merchandise, be familiar with new merchandise and its stories, and remember POS (point of sale) procedures.

It is important that volunteers work scheduled shifts.  If you cannot work, you must call Staff and/or the Volunteer Coordinator as soon as you know you will not make it to work.
