Understanding being Unhoused and how we can help!!

Homelessness is a complex issue that impacts hundreds of individuals and families in Billings and across Montana every day. There are many factors that contribute to someone becoming unhoused, and it's crucial to understand these to truly address the problem.
Top 3 Risk Factors for Becoming Homeless
There are many factors that can lead to being unhoused, but three of the most common are abuse or trauma, chronic health issues, and debt. According to recent statistics:
-
57% of unhoused individuals claimed emotional, physical, psychological, or other types of abuse were a factor in them being unhoused.
-
40% of unhoused individuals claimed their chronic health issue contributed to them being unhoused.
-
35% of unhoused individuals claimed owing money and being in debt contributed to them being unhoused.
These risk factors highlight some of the many challenges faced by those who are unhoused or at risk of becoming unhoused.
Unhoused and Housing Insecurity
Unhoused residents often face multiple barriers to housing stability, and 68% of unhoused residents report feeling unsafe where they are currently living. It's also important to note that the fastest-growing unhoused population is the family unit, highlighting the broad impact of homelessness on our society.
Did You Know?
It actually costs three times less to help our neighbors stay housed than to help them regain housing. This fact underscores the importance of preventative measures and supportive services in addressing homelessness.
How Many Residents Are Unhoused?
Becoming unhoused is more widespread than many people realize. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, 1,405 people in Montana are unhoused on a given night. In addition, there are over 600 students identified as unhoused in the Billings Public Schools system.
